AVR 2: Rating Scale

Overview

Interactions between children and teachers are critical to the quality of care provided in a program. The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS®) is an observation tool that assesses the quality of teacher-child interactions in early childhood classrooms and provides a consistent, reliable, and comprehensive measure of teacher/child interactions.

Requirement

Levels 4 and 5:

CLASS® assessment conducted by MSDE-approved assessor for a random sample of at least 50% of the PreK classrooms.

Documentation to upload: CLASS®summary report completed by MSDE-approved assessor

Instructions

There are multiple steps to take to meet the requirements for AVR 2.

  1. Download the Public Prekindergarten Request for Program Assessment form. This form can also be found in “Resources.”
  2. Email the completed form to the program’s Program Coordinator.
  3. MSDE will contact the program to schedule a visit.
  4. After the scheduled visit, the program will receive a summary report. The documentation required to meet AVR 2 is the CLASS Summary Report.

Next Steps

  • Review the CLASS® summary reports to ensure the required number of reports have been collected.
  • Log into the Maryland EXCELS System to upload the program’s CLASS summary report(s).
  • Submit for review.
