Key Terms

Observation:

Observation is a way to gain information about children that can be used to build relationships, plan meaningful activities, and monitor their progress.

Anecdotal Records:

A method of recording children’s words and actions – what they say and do.

Portfolios:

A collection of children’s work used to capture information and monitor developmental progress. Work samples included in a portfolio should represent many aspects of a child’s development and progress. Different types of work samples (art work, writing, photographs, anecdotal records) from different sources contribute to a more complete picture of a child’s interests, skills, challenges, and progress over time.

Checklists:

Checklists are used to monitor children’s progress on a set of milestones or skills. Often a curriculum includes a checklist for tracking children’s progress that aligns with its goals and objectives.
